Rattles have been used in ceremony, performance and personally by Indigenous people across Turtle Island. The sound of the rattle reminds us of the healing power of rain, the chaos of storms, the nurturing and life giving Nature of Water, and the power contained in each and every one of us. Traditionally, rattles would be filled with rocks, precious stones, shells, seeds and sometimes teeth or small bones to create the sound within. Rattles were often used to pray for and honour the Rains for the sound and connection between Earth and Sky. Join Chantal Chagnon for a two-day rattle-making workshop where participants learn about the history of the rattle, while also making their own rattle. Each day begins with a traditional welcome, smudge and blessing of all materials, tools and rattles. Guiding participants through a step-by-step process of rattle creation, Chantal also shares the history and stories of the rattle and the teachings of the Medicine Wheel.
