Out of Wounds

Sandra shares Out of Wounds at 2026 Matriarchs Uprising Festival

Sandra is pleased to be sharing her work Out of Wounds at the Matriarchs Uprising Festival in Vancouver February 2026. Out of Wounds is a contemporary Indigenous dance performance created on and with the land and arising out of the ancestral blood memory of being a nehiyaw iskwew (Cree woman). During a difficult time in her life, Sandra found herself drawn to the scent of the wihkimâsikan or diamond willow fungus. She uncovered stories of how her own mother, father, and grandfather burned the fungus for smudge and prayer and she found that it calmed her during meditation. After researching how the diamond willow fungus spores often grow out of the wounds of trees, she felt a sacred alignment with her own experience of woundedness, spurring her to create a new work on how both human and fungal bodies grow medicine from wounds.
