Hoop Dance workshop - TRAction

Hoop Dance Workshop

Originating in Anishinaabe culture and now practiced in various Indigenous communities across Turtle Island, hoop dance is a healing dance that explores ideas of circularity, relationality and responsibility. Learning the hoop dance offers a way for a dancer to accept and face their challenges. In working with the hoops, a dancer can find spiritual, physical, emotional and mental healing, as the symbol of the hoop encompasses the four directions and teachings of the Medicine Wheel. Through her workshops, Sandra Lamouche teaches the principles of hoop dance, noting the importance of ethics and protocols in engaging with the form. Participants learn the basics of working with the hoops, while also understanding the importance of the hoop dance as a cultural practice of healing.
